Arnab Goswami remanded to Judicial Custody in Abetment of Suicide Case

Republic TV sends legal notice to Indian Express for the story on Arnab Goswami

Arnab Goswami was arrested by Raigad police on Wednesday from his Mumbai residence, he was brought before the Magistrate in the evening. Republic TV reported that the Bombay High Court is likely to hear tomorrow a petition filed by Goswami seeking to quash the FIR filed against him. He was arrested by Raigadpolice in 2018 in the case of abetting the suicide of an interior designer AnvayNaik and his mother Kumud Naik.

The Maharashtra police registered one more FIR against Goswami for allegedly assaulting a lady constable to resist his arrest on Wednesday.

It was alleged that Anvay left a suicide note written in English in which it was written that they committed suicide on accounts of the payments due to them by owners of three companies. They are:- television journalist Arnab Goswami of Republic TV, Feroz Shaikh of IcastX/ Skimedia and Niteish Sarda of Smartworks.He also stated that Goswami and ARG Outlier Meida Pvt Ltd (parent company of Republic TV) have 83 lakh rupees due to be paid to him.

Raigad police closed this case in 2019 on account of absence of evidence against the accused. But now the case has been re-opened on request of Anvay’s daughter who reached out to Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh seeking the case be reopened. Where the minister has ordered CID re-investigation of the case.

On this the court of Alibag, Maharashtra has remanded Arnab Goswami, Editor-in-Chief of the Republic TV, to 14 days judicial custody in a case for abetment to suicide. The order for remand was passed in a go sitting of ^ hours till late night. The court also rejected Arnab’s plea for Police Custody and will hear his bail plea on next day.

Union Ministers Prakash Javadekar, Smriti Irani, Ravi Shankar Prasad, NirmalaSitharaman, S Jaishankar, UP CM Yogi Adityanath, BJP leader Pragya SinghThakur, etc condemned this order and said this to be an attack on freedom of press.
