Whilst the arguments for the Gujarat riots case were under hearing before the Supreme Court, it was Advocate Kapil Sibal that got emotional whilst talking about the dangers of communal violence and he had also recalled that he had lost both his maternal grandparents during the aftermath of partition, due to the persistent violence.
Kapil was the one who appeared for Zakia Jafri, who was the widow of Ehsan Jafri who was the one killed in Gujarat Riots that took place in 2002, in her petition which challenged clarity that was given to her by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and other big names behind the whole conspiracy.
Sibal had also additionally argued that the SIT had not arrested any accused persons or recorded any statements of any of them. He also highlighted that it was the SIT that neglected the tapes of the sting operation that was done by the Tehalka magazine, wherein many persons had given clear, open statements about their participation and involvement in the violence and accumulation of various weapons, bombs and warfare equipment.
