Issuing a notice to Netflix, the National Child Rights Protection Commission (NCPCR) on Thursday (11 March) asked the subscription-based streaming service provider to stop the streaming of its new series Bombay Begums.
Citing inappropriate depictions of children in the web series, the top child rights body NCPCR has asked Netflix to immediately stop streaming of ‘Bombay Begums’ and submit a detailed action report within 24 hours, failing which, The notice states, it will be forced to commence appropriate legal action.
Written and directed by Alankrita Srivastava, Netflix India’s show Bombay Begum follows the lives of five women from different fields in Mumbai.
In the wake of a complaint received from two Twitter handles regarding the show Bombay Begum, it was alleged that the series normalizes minors indulging in casual sex and drug abuse, with the Apex Child Rights Body 13 (1) (J) took cognizance of tweets under. ) CPCR [Commission for Protection of Child Rights] Act 2005.
This special provision grants the Commission to inquire into complaints and report related matters.
- Lack and violation of child rights;
- Non-implementation of laws providing for the protection and development of children;
