Advocate Rizwan Siddique on Wednesday wrote to the Attorney General of India, KK Venugopal seeking his consent to initiate contempt of court proceedings against stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra for his remarks against the Supreme Court decision.
Kunal Kamra, posted a series of tweets questioning the Supreme Court’s order, granting interim bail to Arnab Goswami. Kamra in his tweets raised doubts on integrity of the Supreme Court calling it “compromised”. Further, in one tweet he morphed the image of the Supreme Court building into orange, with flag of BJP hoisting over its foyer. This did not go down well with the twitter users who started calling him out for his outrageous comments against the top most court.
Kunal Kamra’s another tweet calling the Supreme Court of India as “the Supreme Joke of India” was objected by many lawyers and twitter users.
Advocate Siddique wrote to the Attorney General stating the tweets and its publications scandalize the Hon’ble Supreme Court.
The complaint seeks initiation of contempt proceedings under Section 15(1)(b) of Contempt of Court Act, 1971 r/w Rule 3 of Rules to regulate proceedings for Contempt of Supreme Court, 1975 along with criminal contempt.
He added:
“It is pertinent to note that if this kind of unruly and salacious statements are allowed to go unchecked, influencers having millions of social media followers would start making reckless allegations and diabolical statements against the judges and the courts who do not decide cases in their favour or in accordance to their liking and this trend would soon spell the death knell of an independent judiciary”.
