Former UP Minister Gayatri Prajapati convicted of gang rape

On Wednesday a special court in Lucknow held former UP Minister Gayatri Prajapati with two of his associates, Ashok Tiwari and Ashish Shukla guilty of gang rape. Justice Pawan Kumar Rai of a special MP/MLA court in Lucknow held Prajapati guilty of gang rape charges under Section 482/378/407 of the Indian Penal Code. The punishment is scheduled to be announced on Friday.  

Seven people, including Prajapati, were charged in this case. A woman from Chitrakoot accused the former Samajwadi Party minister and his friends of gang rape. The woman also alleged that the defendant forced sex with her youngest daughter. On February 18, 2017, by order of the Supreme Court, an FIR was filed against Prajapati and six other defendants, all charged with gang rape, death threats and violation of POCSO law.  

Prajapat with Vikas Verma, Amarendra Singh, Chandrapal, Rupeshwar, Shukla and Tiwari were charged in this case. Prajapati and the other accused were arrested and detained after the FIR was lodged.
