The pressure from State Congress President, Navjot Singh Sidhu, resulted in the removal of A.P.S. Deol as Advocate General by the Punjab government, under the leadership of Charanjit Singh Channi. The move was a pre-condition set by Sidhu for resuming his duties as Chairman of the Punjab Congress Committee, even after he withdrew his resignation last week.
In order to show a unified face despite the ongoing crises in the party, Mr Channi and Sidhu spoke at a joint press conference in the state capital and announced that Deol’s resignation was accepted between other cabinet decisions.
“The Advocate General resigned a few days ago. The cabinet has accepted his resignation. The resignation will be sent to the governor and tomorrow we will appoint a new attorney general,” Channi said after chairing the cabinet meeting. The Chief Minister concluded by saying, “Regarding the appointment of the new DGP, we have already given the centre the names”.
Mr Sidhu, who resigned from office on September 28 for no reason, had strong reservations about the appointment of Director General of Police Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota, who was given an additional position as DGP and State’s Advocate General A.P.S. Deol.
Mr Sidhu withdrew his resignation last week, stating that he will return to his functions on the day the state receives a new Advocate General and the DGP. He attacked his own government on public platforms.
