A court in Mumbai on Saturday denied the Enforcement Directorate (ED) request to extend the pre-trial detention of former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh in connection with the money laundering case against him. Deshmukh, on the other hand, was placed in preventive detention for 14 days by the additional trial judge. Deshmukh appeared before officers at the emergency room on Monday, November 1st. After about 12 hours of questioning, Deshmukh was arrested after midnight on Tuesday. The Mumbai court allowed the ED’s custody to Deshmukh till today.
Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh, along with Attorney Shreeram Shirsat, requested an additional nine days in custody today. Anil Deshmukh, a former Maharashtra home minister arrested in a money laundering case, was taken to the ED office for a medical examination before appearing before the PMLA Court today. On November 2, the Mumbai Court in the money laundering case, sent Deshmukh to the Enforcement Directorate for four days, until November 6.
The ED on Thursday summoned Anil Deshmukh’s son, Hrishikesh Deshmukh for questioning him in connection with a money laundering case. The questioning took place yesterday. Deshmukh was arrested on Monday by the authorities on charges of extortion and money laundering brought against him by former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh. Singh alleged that Anil Deshmukh was implicated in various crimes, including asking Sachin Waze to collect 100 crore rupees from bars and restaurants in Mumbai. Senior attorney Vikram Chaudhari with attorney Aniket Nikam opposed the request. After hearing the matter, Holiday Judge PR Sitre declined custody of ED and remanded Deshmukh into custody for 14 days.
