Time to say goodbye to the Supreme Court for CJI SA Bobde

On Friday, CJI Bobde said that it’s time to bid farewell to his office with the satisfaction of giving in 100% to lead the institution. The words uttered by CJI Bobde at the ceremonial goodbye function held in the courtroom on the last working day of a judge. 

Taking a look at his background:

  1. Born in 1956, and in 1978, CJI Bobde enrolled as a lawyer. For over 21 years, CJI Bobde practiced before the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court. He was also designated Senior Advocate in 1998. 
  1. In March 2000, CJI Bobde inducted as a judge of the Bombay High Court and, in October 2012, was made the Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh. On April 12, 2013, CJI Bobde set foot into the Supreme Court and, on November 18, 2019, inducted as the Chief Justice of India. 
  1. During the concluding Supreme Court sitting by CJI Bobde, the senior lawyers present also bid farewell to him along with Attorney General KK Venugopal praising the CJI for his outstanding efforts during the pandemic. 
  1. With this, KK Venugopal stated that this phase is always a sad occasion and that the tenure of a CJI could be three years. 

Moving on, CJI Bobde acknowledged the contributions made by the Supreme Court Registry to facilitate the virtual hearings during the Covid-19 pandemic. Also, despite some of the pertaining issues with the virtual hearings, these could be ironed out. Lastly, CJI Bobde dropped a comment that reads as “virtual hearings give a homely taste and that CJI could see the hills behind lawyers, sculptures and paintings behind lawyers including guns and pistols.”
