On Wednesday, a district court in Uttar Pradesh denied Ashish Mishra’s bail application. Mishra is the primary suspect in the murders of eight people in Lakhmipur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh.
Chief Judicial Magistrate Chinta Ram issued the order dismissing the bail application.
A four-wheeler belonging to Mishra, who is the son of Union Minister for State Ajay Mishra Teni, ploughed down the eight people, including farmers, demonstrating against farm laws.
Mishra was apprehended by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on October 9 after a 12-hour interrogation and sentenced to three days in police custody.
However, the Uttar Pradesh police apprehended two more suspects in connection with the event, bringing the total number of arrests to six, according to The Hindu.
After two lawyers from Uttar Pradesh wrote to CJI NV Ramana, requesting an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation, the Supreme Court took notice of the event (CBI).
Advocates Shivkumar Tripathi and CS Panda further requested that the Union Ministry of Home Affairs issued a directive to ensure that an FIR is filed in the case and that the guilty parties engaged in the incident are punished.
The top court voiced its concern with the way the Uttar Pradesh government and police handled the situation during the case’s hearing on October 8.
The Bench hearing the case, led by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, concluded that the authorities did not appear to be seriously based on the manner the investigation was moving.
The Uttar Pradesh administration, on the other hand, has assured the Court that action would be taken. Mishra was eventually apprehended.
