The Allahabad High Court has received a letter petition seeking an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the Lakhimpur Kheri incident in Uttar Pradesh, in which eight people, including four farmers, were killed when a four-wheeler driven by the son of Union Minister Ajay Mishra mowed them down (Swadesh & Prayag Legal Aid Clinic and ors. v. State of UP)
The event occurred despite the fact that the State machinery, through the police and its Intelligence units, keeps an eye on the security measures taken before any VIP movement, according to the letter appeal filed by NGO Swadesh and Prayagraj Legal Aid Clinic.
It was also said that the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh is in grave danger and that if preventive action is not done by the state as soon as possible, there could be serious consequences.
It was requested that a suo motu public interest litigation petition be filed based on the letter, and that cognizance be taken against the respondent State authorities.
