National Human rights commission has taken suo-moto cognizance and had issued notice to government of Madhya Pradesh, chiefs of police and prison on allegation of gang rape by five policemen. The incident took place in the month of May but since then there was no complaint and even the prison warden could not send the matter to higher authorities.
NHRC mentioned in the report that a 20year old woman was kept in prison for 10days in the month of May and was raped by five policemen including the Police Station Incharge and SDPO (sub-divisional Police Officer) of Mangawan area of Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh. It mentioned that the matter should not be investigated by any person lower than the rank of Deputy inspector general of police.
It added that the crime has occurred even after protest of female constable who was disapproved at that time. Commission added that as alleged by the victim, she was subjected to heinous crime between 09.05.2020 to 21.05.2020 while the police contradicts it and says, she was arrested on 21.05.2020.
The NHRC, in a statement, said that it has issued notices to the chief secretary and the inspector general of prisons of Madhya Pradesh after taking cognizance of alleged “violation” of some inmates, and sought a detailed report.
Suo moto: (also suo motu) Relating to an action taken by a court of its own accord, without any request by the parties involved.
