The need to address the issue faced by the women prisoners: CJI NV Ramana

The Chief Justice of India, NV Ramana who is also the patron chief of NALSA during the 32nd Central Authority Meeting of NALSA expresses concern about the deteriorating condition of women in prison. He laid emphasis on the plight of women in prison.


He remarked “as a welfare state, we are obligated to supply women prisoners with programs and services that enable them to effectively reintegrate into the society, on an equal basis with men. Justice Ramana talks about taking certain actions that would ultimately lead to the reintegration of women prisoners in the society he added, ”non-discriminatory access to education and vocational training, dignified and remunerated work.”


He also acknowledged and appreciated the work of the legal service authority, which disposed of almost 29.5 lakh cases across the 33 state and union territories of the country.
CJI also remarked on increasing access to justice and what should be done to fulfil the gaps, “although much has been spoken about increasing access to justice, the question remains as to how to ensure effective and substantive access to justice to all classes of people and how to meet these gaps” and he further stated that it is high for us to become critical and analytical to meet and the upcoming problems.
The meeting has been co-chaired by the judge of Supreme Court, Justice UU Lalit, who is also the executive chairman of NALSA. He introduced the newly appointed person in the central authority and also praised the work that has been achieved by National Lok Adalat.
