On the occasion of Constitution Day, November 26th a function was organised by the Apex Court. Speaking at the same, the Attorney General of India, KK Venugopal suggested and proposed creation of four benches of Court of appeal.
The suggestion came in, looking at the pendency of cases and the burden the Supreme Court faces. The Proposal included creation of such courts as said above with fifteen (15) Judges each.
The judges will be in a equal position with the Supreme Court Judges, they can also hear the appeals that arise from various High Courts in the country. Eventually, this will make the Supreme Court, a constitutional court. It can deal with issues of National Importance.
The Attorney General was speaking at an event that was organized online, with the President of India, RamNath Kovind and Chief Justice of India, SA Bobde in presence. The Union Law Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad also attended the event.
The proposal included four benches of courts of appeals, namely- East, West, North, and South. The idea behind the suggestion was to reduce the complexities and burden that the Supreme Court deals with. The AG also cited research by Yale University that suggested that of all the cases filed at the Supreme Court, most are from North India.
