Activist Nodeep Kaur Granted Bail by Punjab and Haryana High Court

Dalit labour activist Nodeep Kaur was granted bail recently by the Punjab and Haryana High Court concerning her arrest on January 12, during the farmers’ protests. Ms. Kaur was granted bail in two cases lodged against her alleging extortion. She was kept imprisoned due to a present third case that accused her of offenses under Section 307 (attempt to murder), Section 146 (rioting), and Section 353 (assault to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty) of the Indian Penal Code.

Kaur’s Bail Plea was filed through Advocates Arshdeep Singh Cheema and Pawandeep Singh, Manvendra Singh, Harinder Singh, and Manraj (on behalf of DSGMC) under the guidance of Senior Advocate RS Cheema. The plea stated that Ms. Kaur was falsely arraigned as an accused in an FIR. The Court led by the Bench of Justice Avneesh Jhingan granted her bail since there was not much evidence against Ms. Kaur. The Court also stated that it wanted to investigate the case of “illegal confinement” and torture of the activist by the Police during custody.
