Justice NV Ramana received the President’s acknowledgment to take over as the next Chief Justice of India on Monday. Justice Ramana, appointed to the Supreme Court in February 2014, is the 48th CJI. NV Ramana as CJI on April 4, 2021, post the retirement of CJI Bobde that is due on April 23, 2021. CJI SA Bobde recommended Justice Ramana to be his successor and take over the highest judicial office. Also, it is in line with the seniority standard as per the Supreme Court rule for appointing the CJI.
With over 16 months, Justice Ramana serves as CJI for a considerably long tenure before he retires on August 26, 2022. Moreover, it could be the longest tenure of almost a decade as the Chief Justice of India. We can also note how Justice NV Ramana accused of getting involved with the Amaravati Land Scam by the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. With this, the Supreme Court dismissed the matter after an in-house procedure undertaken to look into the allegations.
