Justice Karnan who is a former Judge of Madras and Calcutta HC was arrested for committing the crime of threatening judicial officers and also giving rape threats to the wives of Judges in a video posted on social media. Justice Karnan became the 1st sitting Judge to be in contempt of court for his behavior towards other fellow judges.
This happened after Madras HC directed the DGP and Chennai Police Commissioner to appear and report about progress in the case of Karnan.
Tamil Nadu Police have submitted an affidavit to the court stating that two rounds of interrogation have been conducted with the accused and referring to this the Bar Council informed the court that the accused had admitted to the commission of the alleged offence and during the course of interrogation and yet no steps were taken to arrest him.
A complaint against the Judge was lodged in October after a complaint of a lawyer of Madras HC. The complaint filed was followed by a letter by Senior Lawyers of the HC to the CJI against Karnan on his video in which he made objectionable remarks for women and threatened spouses of Judicial officers.
