Former CM of MP Kamalnath challenges Election Commission’s decision to revoke his “Star-campaigner” status in Supreme Court

Ex-CM of MP Kamalnath moved to the Supreme Court on 31st October against Election Commission’s order revoking his status as the star campaigner in the by-polls of MP State. The Election Commission of India, citing breach of pole code continuously by Kamalnath issued an order revoking the politician’s status as star campaigner. The order also stated that the ECI had previously taken actions against Kamalnath for violation of poll code for his remarks against the current CM calling him “Milawatkhor” and “mafia” on October 13th and warned him for his remarks against a BJP Candidare Imarti devi calling her an “item”.

The order stated:

“Now, therefore, for repeated violation of Model Code of Conduct and for completely disregarding the advisory issued to him, the Commission hereby revokes the status of leader of political party (Star Campaigner) of Shri Kamalnath, Ex-Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, with immediate effect for the current bye-elections of Legislative Assembly of Madhya Pradesh”

Kamalnath in his petition through Advocate Varun K. Chopra submitted that his remarks were totally misunderstood and interpreted out of context and that there was no malice or any intention to disrespect on the petitioner’s part.  Further, that without any notice being given to the petitioner, his status was revoked and averred that the said order has been passed in complete violation of principles of natural justice.
