The single bench of Justice Anu Malhotra of the Delhi High Court has beefed up the police security of the couple after a Muslim-Dalit couple was allegedly attacked by a violent mob at their home after marriage and sought a status report from the police. According to the petition, the marriage between a Muslim girl and a Hindu Dalit boy took place after voluntarily adopting Hinduism.
However, the petitioner states that the boy’s family is under attack in his house at Harijan Basti in Sarai Kale Khan, New Delhi, which poses challenges to the couple with the girl’s family after marriage.
The petition states that scenes of the incident on March 20 were shared on social media by several journalists and even included in CCTV footage of the local area. The petitioner said that although an FIR has been registered on the incident by Sun Light Police Station, only 4 people have been arrested so far. The FIR excludes sections of the provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, which is designed to protect the Dalit community.
There is, therefore, the possibility of another violent attack which could disturb the public peace, and therefore the boy’s family members moved the High Court for proper instructions.
