SC to Hear Arnab Goswami’s Plea Challenging Maharashtra Assembly’s “Breach of Privilege Motion” Notice

Arrest Shield granted to Arnab Goswami; Assembly officer gets notice of Contempt by Supreme Court.

Journalist and Editor-in-chief of the Republic Media Network, Arnab Goswami moved the Supreme Court challenging the breach of privilege motion notice against him by the Maharashtra Assembly and the Legislative Council for criticizing the government inaction in Sushant Rajput’s death case.

A privilege motion can be moved when an individual or an authority disregards or infringes any of the privileges or immunities of the house, or the members of the house or the committee.

The Privilege motion against Arnab Goswami was moved by Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik, alleging that Arnab Goswami used derogatory language against Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and NCP President Sharad Pawar in relation to the inaction by the Maharashtra Government in Sushant Rajput’s death case.

The 60 pages privilege notice was sent to Arnab Goswami after the motions were moved against him by the Shiv Sena in both the Assembly houses in Maharashtra.

Responding to this, Arnab Goswami released a statement in his channel, the Republic TV stating that he will continue to question Uddhav Thackeray and the other elected representatives and that he decided to contest the notice.

A bench comprising of Chief Justice SA Bobde, Justice AS Bopanna and Justice V. Ramasubramanian are expected to hear the plea today.
