Plea in SC demanding strict laws for rape, POCSO, PMLA, NDPS, etc.

The Supreme Court bench comprising of Justice NV Ramana, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Aniruddha Bose on Wednesday has refused to entertain a plea seeking a direction to the government to bring certain reforms and amendments in the law to make the cases of rape more stringent and deterrent with grievous injury also in case of gang rape and murder. The petition was filed by Advocate Kirti Ahuja and others.

The court while disposing the case granted them- “liberty to make a representation to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Law and Justice and Ministry of Women and Child Development regarding the issues and said that it ‘hopes and trusts that they shall consider the same and take appropriate action on that’

The court also said that- “We appreciate the efforts made by the petitioners-in-person but do not think it proper to give any direction to the Government to legislate.”

The petitioners say that the amendments should make stringent provision for bail of accused of such cases and other offences under Acts like POCSO, PMLA and NDPS. They also sought for issuing guidelines and directions to be followed and implemented for existing rape laws and to follow the already given laws of Supreme Court in regard to protection of Victims identity, etc.

Lastly, they sought from the Government to introduce a compulsory subject in schools on Gender Sensitization, moral, and Sex education.
