The Bombay High Court on Thursday asked the Central and Maharashtra governments whether the Aadhaar card is mandatory for inmates to get corona vaccine. Inmates cannot be denied vaccination because they do not have an Aadhaar card.
A bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Dutta and Justice GS Kulkarni raised this question when they were told that many prisoners were not vaccinated due to a lack of an Aadhaar card. In this case, which took automatic cognizance in view of the infection of corona in jails of Maharashtra, the bench said, “Aadhaar card is needed for vaccines so that data can be collected and those who have been vaccinated can be monitored.”
No prisoner can be denied vaccination because he does not have an Aadhaar card. The court directed Advocate General Ashutosh Kulkarni, appearing for the state government, to discuss the matter with Union Solicitor General Anil Singh and told the High Court about this by May 4.
