Hon’ble Justice N.V. Ramana earlier today on 24th April 2021, Saturday morning swore in as the 48th Chief Justice of India (CJI) by Hon’ble President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Hon’ble Justice N.V. Raman succeeds Hon’ble Justice SA Bobde, who retired on 23rd April 2021. 

Hon’ble Justice Ramana will have a tenure of one year and four months as Hon’ble Chief Justice of India and will relinquish office on 26th August 2022. 

It a great honor to say that after Hon’ble Justice K. Subba Rao,  Hon’ble Justice Ramana is the second Chief Justice of India from the state of Andhra Pradesh. 

In the background, Hon’ble Justice N.V. Raman practiced as an advocate at the Hon’ble Andhra Pradesh High Court, Central and Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tribunals, and the Hon’ble Supreme Court before being appointed as a permanent Judge of the Hon’ble Andhra Pradesh High Court on June 27, 2000. 

Hon’ble Justice N.V. Raman performed as acting Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court between 10th March 2013 and 20th May 2013 and subsequently, was preeminent as the Hon’ble Chief Justice of Delhi High Court on 2nd  September 2013. 

Hon’ble Justice N.V. Raman was later appointed as a Hon’ble Judge of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India on 17th February 2014. 

Hon’ble Justice N.V Ramana has been a part of several landmark judgments, underscoring constitutional rights, democratic values, and accountability. The Hon’ble Justice N.V Raman is seen as a conventional judge, who is restrained in his speech. The Hon’ble Justice is known to talk less and for clarity of thoughts in his orders and judgments and adhering to the principles of judicial discipline and the rule of precedents. 

Born to agriculturist parents in 1957, Hon’ble Justice N.V. Ramana is known for his activism concerning issues involving farmers and industrial workers. Needful to mention that before spinning to legal practice, Hon’ble Justice was a journalist with a prominent Telugu newspaper. 

Needful to mention that the ceremony earlier today to administer the oath of office as 48th  Chief Justice of this Great Nation, held as per COVID-19 protocol. The ceremony was attended by Hon’ble Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, among others.
