Swapna Suresh and 7 others granted bail by Karnataka High Court in Gold Smuggling case

On Tuesday, Swapna Suresh with 7 other accused was granted bail by the Kerala High Court. The accused were arrested in the case registered by the NIA under the provisions of UAPA. 

 In February, the NIA filed its charge sheet in a special court against 20 people for allegedly participating in the smuggling of 30 kg of gold worth 14.82 crore rupees in diplomatic luggage to Kerala.   

The case concerns the seizure of 30 kg of gold from diplomatic baggage in air cargo on July 5th last year at Trivandrum International Airport by the Customs (Prevention) Commissionerate in Kochi.  

The shipment was found camouflaged in diplomatic baggage of the UAE, which is exempted from control under the Vienna Convention. IAS officer Sivasakar’s has been dismissed as principal secretary to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and also IT Secretary of state for alleged links with Swapna Suresh and other defendants in the case.
